Mexico › Yucatan Peninsula Assessment

We conducted a craft sector assessment in Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo to evaluate artisans’ economic potential and business needs. They interviewed 83 artisan groups, uncovering a large, skilled labor force, predominantly women, with limited education and few job opportunities. The assessment revealed that while traditional craft skills are well-developed, product designs lack innovation, limiting market success. Opportunities were identified in artisanal food processing and the need for improved raw material supply, market-based design, and business training to enhance the sector's growth and income potential.

Key Achievements:

  • Evaluated artisan groups by examining their skills and craft potential, including textiles and local artisanal foods.

  • Analyzed economic aspects of the craft industry, identifying constraints and gaps in raw material supply and business services.

  • Engaged local partners to support artisan communities, leveraging successful strategies from previous projects.

  • Assessed market potential by exploring sales opportunities in the tourist industry and international market.

  • Focused on blending cultural heritage with market demand to preserve identity while fostering economic growth.
