Yemen › Competitive Agriculture Systems for High Value Crops - CASH

The CASH program aimed to enhance the business skills of 20 rural Yemeni women for producing and selling basketry products in local markets. This involved identifying and training local artisan leaders to extend their knowledge to surrounding communities. Despite the challenges posed by the evolving situation in Yemen, the Artisan Holiday Gift Fair successfully engaged artisans, generated income, and offered valuable insights for future efforts.

Key Achievements:

  • Identified and trained women artisan leaders as local trainers, enabling them to share their skills with a broader network of women in their communities.

  • Developed the business skills of 20 rural Yemeni women in producing and marketing basketry products.

  • Successfully organized the Artisan Holiday Gift Fair, which, despite the shift from an expatriate to a local market, proved to be a strong motivator and income generator for participating artisans.

  • Provided a practical training opportunity through the fair, which helped engage various actors in the artisan value chain and produced valuable lessons for future initiatives.

  • Supported a Yemeni artisan company, Lolo’a Art & Design, in participating in the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt and pursuing market linkages with the US through subsequent opportunities like NYNOW and MRP.
